Sitting elegantly on the banks of the Grand Canal at Shannon Harbour, Banagher, Co Offaly, the 3 star Harbour Master’s House B&B offers its’ visitors a warm and wonderful “Céad Míle Fáilte” Irish Welcome. Grainne and Jim Kirwan have run their historic and charming home as a B&B since 2000 and have earned an enviable reputation as congenial and wonderful hosts.
The Harbour Master’s House B&B boasts many recommendations, including Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guide. It also features in the short documentary/film “A Grand Experience – A Journey on the Grand Canal from Shannon Harbour to Edenderry”. This film was commissioned by Offaly County Council and shown on Ireland’s national TV station RTE in 2012.
Built in 1806 to house the Harbour Master and his family, Grainne herself grew up in the house as her own father was the last ever Harbour Master for the then busy commercial canal. Other listed buildings in this scenic village include, The Grand Canal Hotel, The Royal Irish Constabulary Barracks and The Grand Canal Stores, all earmarked for restoration.
The 3-storey house is beautifully proportioned, with 2-storey wings on either side of the main building and a flight of stone steps leading up to the front door. The interior of the house matches in every way its’ elegant facade. With a mixture of contemporary comforts, beautifully placed period furniture and fascinating historical memorabilia. Visitors to this beautiful B&B are guaranteed a unique, interesting and relaxing stay.
The view to the front of the Harbour Master’s House B&B is straight out onto the canal with its colourful mixture of barges and boats. To the rear of the property are the immaculately kept formal gardens. Guests can relax in the peace and quiet of the first floor sunroom overlooking the gardens.
The Harbour Master’s House B&B provides the ideal spot for many outdoor activities; angling and fishing, walking, shooting, cycling, golfing and much more.
For guests interested in history, Clonmacnoise and Birr Castle are a short drive away. Ghost-hunters amongst you can visit Leap Castle; featured on Sky’s “Most Haunted”. Families are also well catered for with a lovely secure playground metres from the house. Attractions in the local area also include Glendeer Pet Farm and Lough Boora Parklands.
There is ample and secure car parking and storage facilities provided. Guests can also use the purpose built laundry rooms operated using a Smart Card system.
